India has the third largest population of people living with dementia, and it is thought that around 4.5 million Indians have memory issues to some extent. Despite this, studies have shown a 90% gap in treatment.

DEMCARES (Dementia Care in SCARF), a dementia focused programme, was launched by the Schizophrenia Research Foundation (SCARF) in January 2015. Since then, DEMCARES has successfully provided clinical and support services for people with dementia and their families.

Following on from the success of DEMCARES, the next step is to open a dementia inpatient unit in Chennai (DEMSCARF: Dementia short-term care facility). The DSDC has been working with the project team to create a design for an inpatient facility which is supportive of those with a diagnosis of dementia.
