... that about two thirds of all people with dementia live at home? Supporting people to remain in their own homes for as long as possible is a key objective of the national dementia strategies. Following on the success of the Best Practice for Healthcare Assistants courses for staff working in hospitals and care homes, a new course is being developed which has been designed to provide domiciliary care staff with an opportunity to learn about dementia and solutions to the challenges of caring for people in their own home in terms of safety and standards of care. The course content supports the Standards of Care for Dementia in Scotland , 2011 and the Common Core Principles for Supporting People with Dementia (Skills for Care, Skills for Health, Department of Health 2011) Nicola Sturgeon, Cabinet Secretary for Health, will launch the programme at DSDC, Stirling on 8th September 2011 (10am-2.00pm). Catriona Walker’s grandad, Joseph, had many titles - war hero, role model, father, husband, grandad, but above all a gentleman to the end. Catriona is taking part in a 10k run in memory of her late grandad, and to raise funds to help people with dementia and their carers. Read Catriona’s story on our website and visit her JustGiving page to help her reach her target.
