Lothian Dementia Project

Background to the Lothian Dementia Project

The Dementia Service Development Centre promotes a range of multi-disciplinary and multi-agency dementia initiatives. This three year programme aims to help Lothian achieve the HEAT targets set by the Scottish Government through better support of people with dementia, especially at the point of diagnosis. The project will be supported and complimented by the work of the Mental Health Collaborative.

There is evidence that people with dementia have mixed experiences at the point of diagnosis. Although there are many examples of good practice, some people with dementia feel they are given very little support. Similarly, some staff may not think it is their job, or that they are not qualified, to provide adequate support. Encouraging the development of more integrated systems is a key feature of long-term policy imperatives across older people's services. This project will help the achievement of the Scottish Government HEAT targets.

The project ended in March 2011.

How will the project work?

In March 2009, a convention was held to decide what needs to be done to make caring for people with dementia easier in Lothian. An improvement programme is now underway and will run for two years.

The project progress can be followed in the monthly reports.
