Amber Wood is a new build purpose built residential care home, specialising in dementia care. It is centrally located in Burton on Trent, England, with a peaceful woodland backdrop. Accommodation consists of 45 single en-suite bedrooms, split into 3 households of 15 residents, across ground and first floor. A large rear garden, roof terrace and two internal courtyards provide residents with unrestricted access to the outdoors.
Centrally, a welcoming and bright communal hub joins the households together comprising of reception, offices, butler's pantry, coffee area, activity/ meeting room, hair salon and the main commercial kitchen. This multipurpose area can be used for large social events, or for residents to enjoy with their visitors. The Butler's Pantry and drinks preparation area is a wonderful feature to encourage eating throughout the day and maintain activities of daily living.
The open plan, yet 'zoned' lounge, dining, kitchen areas of each household are social hubs of activity, with the choice of quieter more private spots also available, preserving a small scale domestic feel without reducing the ease of movement or connectedness. Televisions are positioned away from lounge spaces to encourage interaction and communication between residents with a designated ‘home cinema’ room provided in each household. This supports a community feel, and the open plan nature provides a good vantage point for staff, with easy visual access to generous gardens, where circular routes lead back to their starting point.
Meaningful activity is supported throughout the development, from collecting household groceries from the central hub pantry, use of the salon, tending to the garden and vegetable plots, to helping with laundry duties. The emphasis on intergenerational activities is also a wonderful aspect which we believe will greatly benefit the wellbeing and happiness of residents.
