The Genius of Marian

This stunning award-winning film documents the journey of Pam White and her family following her diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer’s disease in 2008.

The year before her diagnosis, Pam had begun to write a book, ‘The Genius of Marian’, as a tribute to her mother, the acclaimed American portrait and landscape artist, Marian Williams Steele. Marian had herself lived with Alzheimer’s in the late 1990s before her death in 2001 at age eighty-nine.  Pam’s son, film director Banker White, decided to continue the legacy his mother had started by creating a film, using the title of his mother’s planned book. The film captures the experience of Pam and her family over the progression of her illness, combining footage of Pam’s childhood and her mother’s paintings to produce a vivid tapestry of the past and present.

‘The Genius of Marian will be screened as part of the Dementia and Ageing Research Group Seminar on 13 May.
