Cecil Gardens, Hull

Award: GOLD

Cecil Gardens Hull Extra Care PFI is an Extra Care Housing development built in 2015 and managed by Riverside. It consists of a total of 95 flats, made up of one and two bedrooms each with a lounge/dining, kitchen and accessible shower room. Each flat benefits from having private outdoor space which is accessed from the lounge to a ground floor terrace or a private balcony on the first floor. The Extra Care scheme is managed by Riverside and benefits from on-site care staff; 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The building is conveniently located within an area of new housing and is within a short distance of public transport, shops, doctor’s surgery and other local amenities. Access to the site is level and the building design sits comfortably within the surrounding housing stock. There is a large drop-off zone at the main entrance, flanked by 3 disabled parking bays on either side.

The DSDC Auditors were particularly impressed by the provision of varied public spaces at Cecil Gardens which include; Lounges, dining room, hobby room, activities room, library, community centre and also a hairdressing salon and restaurant which are both open to the public. Residents benefit from a good variety of well organised activities which take place in purpose designed multi-functional rooms that provide wall space for residents’ crafts and artwork to be displayed. The layout of the building has been designed in such a way that 4 secure courtyard gardens have been created, each with a unique layout. Different features such as the sitooterie in one garden, petanque games area in another and summerhouse in yet another, provide focal points and help to differentiate the gardens to aid wayfinding.

This is one of three projects in Hull by Riverside to receive a DSDC Gold award and we commend the organisation on their attention to detail and on adopting the DSDC evidence based design principles in their new-build residencies.
