Roker ward for men and Mowbray for women are the two dementia assessment wards at Monkwearmouth Hospital in Sunderland. Each has twelve beds and there is a shared area with a café with a patio outside and a shared general purpose lounge which can be used for a range of activities such as a cinema or celebration events.
The wards achieve truly remarkable levels of dementia friendliness within the constraints of normal NHS mental health unit requirements. Features such as cross head taps, normal doors and door handles and highly visible normal toilet rolls are rarely seen but they make a huge difference to the independence and confidence of people with dementia.
There is an excellent, easily accessible outside space. The outcome is a genuinely dementia friendly environment.
