Redwood Glades, Hull

Award: GOLD

Redwood Glades Hull Extra Care PFI was built in 2017 and consists of 156 one and two bedroom flats. Each flat contains a kitchen, lounge/dining and accessible shower room. Each flat has outdoor access to a private terrace on the ground floor level or a private balcony on the first floor. The Extra Care scheme is managed by Riverside and benefits from on-site care staff; 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
From the main road, the front of the building sits behind a line of mature trees and the building exterior is softened throughout with planting and grassy areas. A drop-off zone for an ambulance or mini-bus is positioned to the left of the main entrance. The entrance is welcoming and benefits from the community café with tables and chairs extending into a large outdoor patio area.
The provision of outdoor space includes 2 large secure courtyard gardens positioned within the centre of the building. Both gardens are different in their content and planting, helping with wayfinding and place recognition. The DSDC auditors were impressed with the outdoor provision which was enhanced by large gardening areas including raised planters and glasshouses, games areas, safe articulated pathways for exercise and an abundance of seating which was well spaced along pathways and in large covered patio areas.
A welcoming and homely aesthetic has been achieved throughout the interiors and DSDC design principles have been incorporated in many aspects of the design.
This is the one of three projects in Hull by Riverside to receive a DSDC Gold award and we commend the organisation on their attention to detail and on adopting the DSDC evidence based design principles in their new-build residencies.
