Best Practice Programme

DSDC’s award winning Best Practice in Dementia Care Learning Programme has been running since 2007 and is used by organisations globally.

Designed for health and social care staff, the programme works to develop existing skills, expand knowledge and improve the quality of care for people with dementia. The programme empowers learners and increases their confidence level within the workplace.

How does it work?

One nominated staff member attends the DSDC Best Practice in Dementia Care Facilitator Training, which is Accredited by RCN, with 16 hours of CPD. This is the staff member(s) who you want to Facilitate the programme in your organisation.

Training is delivered online and completed over a four-week period: two weeks to complete the training content; one week to complete course submission, with feedback then provided at the end of week four.

Once your Facilitator has successfully completed the course, they will be provided with eight Participant Workbooks, and a Facilitator Guide, for them to take colleagues through the course. Facilitators are encouraged to set up a series of meetings over an four to six month period for the group to work their way through the course.

Once the Participants have completed the course, they complete a short reflective exercise, which is sent into DSDC for marking.

Facilitators can continue to take groups through the programme with the purchase of additional training materials.

DSDC recommends working through the workbooks over a four to six-month period. Training materials are designed for self-study to allow training to be meaningful and individualised, although there is also group work.

The Facilitator will act as a mentor to Participants to encourage them to meet their personal learning objectives. By meeting regularly to discuss the resources, it allows the opportunity for learners to reflect on experiences and practices and link their new knowledge to consider how they would make changes moving forward.

At the end of the programme, Participants submit a short reflective exercise which is submitted to DSDC for marking.
